Brad Wilson

Home-Grown Servant Leader

“We’ve built something truly special here. It’s a place where kids can thrive, and families want to be a part of.”

In the heart of the Benton Grade School District, where hard work, shared values, and community spirit converge, lives a man whose dedication to his hometown and to his family, has quietly become a humble reflection of the place he calls home. Brad Wilson, a class of ‘98 Benton High School alumnus and the current president of the Benton Grade School Board, exemplifies what it means to give back to one’s community. His journey from a curious student to a devoted public servant is a story that reflects the values and resilience of Benton itself.

Early Years and Community Roots
Brad’s connection to Benton runs deep. Born and raised in this close-knit community, he married his high school sweetheart, Brad recalls with a smile. “We started dating in eighth grade, built our house here, and have never left.” It’s a testament to the strong bonds and unwavering loyalty that characterize Benton’s residents.

From a young age, Brad knew he wanted to be involved in his community. “We had our first daughter. She was four years old, and I wanted to be involved in the process of shaping her education,” he explains. This desire led him to run for the school board, a decision that would mark the beginning of a long and impactful journey.

Leadership and Dedication
Brad has served on the school board for 16 years, with the last seven as its president. His commitment is evident in the countless hours he dedicates to ensuring the best for Benton’s students. “Being on the school board is a volunteer position. It takes time away from family, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” Brad shares. His leadership style is rooted in a philosophy of service and respect, a reflection of his deep faith and community values.

One of Brad’s proudest accomplishments is the collaborative atmosphere he and others on the board have fostered. “Our members are dedicated to the right reasons – the kids. We’ve built a great team with diverse backgrounds, from educators to community members, each bringing a unique perspective,” he notes. This balance has been crucial in navigating challenges and making decisions that benefit the entire community.

Navigating Challenges
The journey hasn’t been without its trials. Brad recounts a particularly difficult period about eight years ago when state funding issues forced the district to make tough decisions, including potential layoffs. “It was the most trying time,” he says. “But we stood up for our teachers and our community. We had to make hard choices, but we always put the kids first.” Through resilience and community support, they managed to recall most of the staff, emerging stronger and more united.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought another set of challenges, particularly regarding mask mandates and state directives. As Brad and I talked, having lived through this era myself in similarly difficult circumstances, I could tell that Brad’s approach was one of calm deliberation and respect for diverse opinions. “We had passionate discussions, but we always respected each other’s viewpoints. It’s about making the best decision for the community as a whole,” he explains.

A Vision for the Future
Brad’s vision for Benton Grade School is forwardthinking and ambitious. The Destination 2027 initiative, spearheaded by Superintendent, Dr. Steve Smith, aims to elevate the district’s standards and provide exceptional opportunities for all students. “The goals may seem lofty, but they’re attainable,” Brad insists. “It’s about putting kids in a position to succeed, whether that means extra help with reading or advanced science labs.”

Under Brad’s tenure, the district has seen significant improvements in facilities and programs. The event center, the new science lab, and enhanced arts and music programs are just a few examples of the progress made. “We’ve built something truly special here,” he says with pride. “It’s a place where kids can thrive, and families want to be a part of.”

Personal Reflections and Community Pride
For Brad, Benton is more than just a place to live; it’s a community that supports and uplifts one another. He reflects on the overwhelming support for the school’s basketball team at this year’s state championships and the packed events at the civic center. “Benton is a family town,” he says. “We rally around each other in times of joy and sorrow. It’s a special place to grow up and raise a family.”

As a father of two daughters, Brad’s commitment to education and community is also deeply personal. His eldest daughter, Kadinz, is pursuing a career in education, while his younger daughter, Keezley, excels in both academics and athletics at Benton Grade School. “I’m so proud of my girls and the opportunities they have here,” he beams. “It’s a testament to the hard work of our educators and the supportive environment we’ve created.”

A Lasting Legacy
As Brad looks to the future, his message to the young people of Benton is clear: “Don’t let anyone define who you are. You have the power to shape your own destiny.” His story is a powerful reminder that with dedication, faith, and a supportive community, anything is possible.

In Brad Wilson, Benton Grade School and the community at large have a leader whose quiet wisdom, passion, and commitment continue to inspire. His journey from student to school board president is a testament to the enduring spirit of Benton – a place where dreams are nurtured, and every child is given the opportunity to succeed.

A Final Word
Brad’s story is not just his own; it’s the story of Benton. It’s a narrative of resilience, community, and the unwavering belief that together, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness. As we celebrate Brad’s contributions, we also celebrate the community that shaped him – a community that stands as a beacon of pride and possibility.
